The growth in sustainable business spending in 2012 will be 12%, which is 20 times faster than the forecasted growth of the UK economy at 0.6%. With current GDP assumptions, annual growth rates will accelerate from 15% in 2013 to 17% in both 2014 and 2015.
In the context of the 16% compound annual growth rate, some initiatives will experience significant growth and others will barely keep pace with inflation. Fast growing areas of spend between 2010 and 2015 are smart meters (23%), electric vehicles (22%), on-site renewable energy (22%), product stewardship (21%) and sustainable solution marketing (21%). Initiatives that will experience slower growth rates are: spending on social responsibility (5%), employee engagement (5%), environment, health and safety (6%), regulatory affairs and lobbying (6%). Taken as a whole, strategic energy management will be the largest area of spend in sustainable business budgets.

How important is sustainability to your company’s philosophy, strategy and practices? It is one of our main foundations, both from a personal, business and legal perspective. We will not be able to keep progressing in the future if we do not respect the environment and assist others to be aware of it. It is not an option, it is an essential requirement.
What is the biggest sustainability challenge facing your company e.g. Supply chain, consumer buy in? In every step of the real estate developing process we meet new challenges regarding sustainability. It effect, everything that we do from recycling in the Administration Offices to the overall construction model to the requirements we demand from our suppliers. It encompasses every aspect, every angle of the process. It is a cultural aspect of our business and our life.
What is the one sustainable aspect or feature at your resort that you are most proud of? The awareness of every person within our organisation. Everyone has a strong commitment to, and an understanding of, the company’s sustainable approach.
Do you think developing sustainably is a moral imperative or a business decision – and are the two mutually exclusive? Definitively it is a combination of both aspects. Neither is exclusive but on the contrary involve both standpoints.
What would encourage your company to strive for even higher sustainability aspirations e.g. Corporate social responsibility, tax breaks, consumer demand? Aspects such as legislation and individual conscience would encourage our company to strive for higher sustainability aspirations.

I would like to answer in the affirmative, but probably some of them could do better. Anyway what it is important is that the situation and commitment has changed positively in recent years.
If you had a super power what would you use it for – within a sustainability context? I would change what was done incorrectly in the past. Regrettably this is not possible anymore, so we have to focus on what we can do now and in the future. This is the challenge and the main goal.
