Bath University research park to lead on innovation
The University of Bath has been granted planning permission to build a research park at Wroughton airfield, Swindon. The initiative has been created to help researchers and construction companies to develop and explore innovative building materials. The first project to be developed is the HIVE, a £1 million building funded by the EPSRC, for research into low carbon, low impact construction materials. Development will commence in Autumn 2013. Dr Mike Lawrence from the University’s BRE Centre for Innovative Construction Materials (who will speak at the LGGL conference) will lead the programme. Dr Lawrence said: “Experimentation and study, using HIVE, is an essential stage in understanding just how these materials will perform in the real world, and how best to use them in novel low impact construction technologies.”
The Sustain Worldwide Leaders Series roundtable, held on 18 April, was attended by senior figures from Affinity REPE, Buro Happold, Climaveneta and TFT. The open, collaborative and productive workshop met to create a framework structure to explore the conception and delivery of an exemplar sustainable building in London whose function will be a members club. The next roundtable will meet on 23 May in central London. Contact us to enquire about joining the Leaders Series.

Innovative solar water heating system retains stored heat
Engineers at the University of Ulster have developed a water heating system which both collects solar energy and retains the stored heat. The team, from the Centre of Sustainable Technologies note the system, called SolaCatcher, works by collecting solar energy on the system's exposed, absorbing surface and transferring the thermal energy into useful stored heat in an inner container. The heat transfer mechanism, using a combination of phase change technology and low pressure environment, creates a thermal diode operation facilitating optimal capture and heat retention.

Introducing Sustain Worldwide member
Steve Williamson, Partner, Buro Happold
Q: What does innovation through sustainability & CSR mean to you? A: At Buro Happold we understand that sustainability is wider than just the built environment, and goes beyond achieving the highest BREEAM or LEED numbers; it’s shared learning, as much about process as it is about the end product. It means practising what you preach, being open and honest and sometimes having to admit that you may not have all the answers immediately. From a built environment perspective, innovation through sustainability means creating synergies; making great spaces that people love and are in harmony with the natural environment. We also want to run a business that enables and empowers our staff to develop as individuals, creating and delivering solutions that they believe in. It’s also about partnerships: working with the people we know can help us to deliver a better built environment for the future.
Q: How important is sustainability to your company’s philosophy, strategy and practices? A: We have a long standing philosophy of “touching the earth lightly”. The concepts of efficiency and doing more with less were the foundations on which the original partners built the practice back in 1976. They believed in the concept of systems thinking and that the whole was more than the sum of its parts. These principals of integrated thinking are key to the concept of sustainability and something that is very much engrained in the way that Buro Happold does business.
Q: What is the biggest sustainability challenge facing your company e.g. supply chain, embedding sustainability in your practices? A: As an integrated consultancy, Buro Happold has a wide skill set which means when we work together and collaborate with wider organisations, we are well placed to understand the sustainability impacts of our clients and their projects. Our understanding of sustainability is dynamic and evolving as we have the opportunities to work on a greater diversity of global projects across sectors and scales. As an organisation we embrace these challenges of cross team working and the communication of complex ideas through many different forms of media. This will be key to continuing the learning and development we need to progress and to deliver more sustainable projects.
Q: Do you think doing business sustainably is a moral imperative or a business decision – and are the two mutually exclusive? A: The extra passion we put into our work is driven by the moral obligation to tackle key global challenges such as climate change, economic development and inequality. We know that building a place with a future involves creating strong communities that enable economies to thrive, engaging with big issues and enriching peoples’ lives. Our staff and our clients recognise the value our approach brings, which in turn translates into higher retention rates, longer term projects and relationships built on trust which are of course good for our business.
Q: What would encourage your company to strive for even higher sustainability aspirations e.g. corporate responsibility, tax breaks, tougher legislation? A: We are currently working on our own version of corporate responsibility which we call “Happoldness Is…” This has been driven by our vision to enable our clients to achieve a sustainable future by creating solutions that enhance their business and enrich peoples’ lives based on our own learnings. However, we understand the importance of practicing what you preach and therefore we are keen to develop our own definition of CSR which is true to the values upon which Buro Happold was founded. For us it’s not about ticking the box or applying existing sustainability standards but harnessing the experience and passion of our people to deliver more with less.
Q: What sort of new business opportunities are you looking for e.g. In which countries, sectors e.g. private, commercial? A: We are always looking for new projects and clients that are willing to raise the bar to deliver a truly sustainable project. Key areas of market focus for us in the coming years include education, retail, healthcare, aviation, sports and cultural projects as well as strategic sustainability consulting in the UK and around the world.
Q: What services and USP’s do you offer clients? A: Buro Happold delivers world class engineering consultancy across a range of built environment disciplines. Our work spans across sectors and scales, ranging from the design and delivery of individual buildings, the development of masterplans to strategic sustainability consulting. We understand that working collaboratively with our clients to define their visions and achieve them will make the biggest positive impact. Our role is to make sense of complexity to help deliver that vision.
Q: If you had a super power what would you use it for – within a sustainability context? A: The ability to see the outcome of our decisions and actions before we undertake them. This would then enable us to ensure that the decisions we make have a positive long term impact on the future.
