The Sustain Worldwide organised VIP visit to the Sir Terry Farrell master-planned, 13-acre, mixed-use Regent’s Place Estate in London on 29 November created positive interest amongst the guests.
Thirty VIPs and press attended the event, which was hosted by Sarah Cary, Sustainable Developments Executive, British Land, which owns and manages the site. The guests enjoyed a behind the scenes tour of the estate, located in a previously run-down part of London, which now boasts a vibrant community feel.
The British Land exemplar has been more than a decade in development and the latest phase, which our guests saw for themselves, completes the picture. The North East Quadrant phase consists of two commercial office buildings sited at the gateway to Triton Street, a residential building comprising 154 apartments, a 20-storey tower with views over Regent’s Park and private landscaped gardens, the New Diorama theatre, retail spaces, external landscaping and public works of art.
Sarah was joined on the panel of speakers by Giles Martin, Director, Wilkinson Eyre who spoke about the architecture of 10 Brock Street and how it has contributed to the estate’s sense of place by creating a vibrant and sustainable place for the community; Phil Draper, Senior Sustainability Manager, Regent’s Place Management and Rob Richardson, Estate Manager, who spoke about the building in operation, day to day energy/ waste/ethical/community results; and Steven Shepherd, Managing Director UK, Climaveneta who talked about the role of HVAC in creating a positive and sustainable, energy efficient working environment.

Sustain Worldwide launches Filmed Content Consultancy Service
High quality filmed content has the ability to speak volumes about your brand, your people and your products and services. It's also never been more valuable as a marketing tool. Google now elevates visual content above the written word. This means googles's SEO picks up on films & video first. So, those who have it on their website will come higher up the page than those who don't. National and trade press are also inclined to show films online to complement a printed story.
We at Sustain Worldwide realise the value. So we have partnered with award-winning Taylor Made Media (clients include: Unilever; SAP; Rogers, Stirk, Harbour and Partners; and McDonald's) to provide blue chip companies with compelling and commercial filmed content that will position your company as a market leader. The filmed content consultancy offering adds to and complements our existing PR & Events Management services.

Shading system inspired by blooming flower
A building façade shading system, called Flectofin®, that folds without joints and hinges has been awarded the Gips-Schüle Research Prize and 40,000 Euro (£33,800), reports Technology4change.com. Flectofin works like a vertical blind and uses a highly elastic and malleable folding mechanism made from plastic reinforced with glass fibre. The system is said to be inspired by the Bird of Paradise flower. Researchers say the adjustable folding mechanism is used to avoid potential problems created by joints and hinges. The basic principles can be developed into various versions from detached houses, up to large (including curved) facades, say researchers.
Life From Solar – Investing Together to Improve the Lives of Others
Joanna Lumley has been putting her money where her mouth is by investing in two innovative solar projects: Solar Desalination and Raincatcher systems. The ‘national treasure’ said: "I see great potential in both of these systems specifically to help improve the provision of safe drinking water to those people across the world who are in dire need of this valuable resource.”
The inventions are the brainchild of Alexander Bushell. He has also invented a Solar Powered Oxygen Generating System, Portable Bacterial Detection products and a Solar Powered Filtration System with both Aids and Kidney Dialysis applications. The projects can be supported and viewed at the Innovation Centre based at The Kent Science Park, Sittingbourne, Kent.
Partners & Members News in Brief
Buro Happold prides itself on its innovation. Nevertheless launching a magazine albeit an online one is a bold move for an engineering practice. But there’s the rub. While, of course, they provide engineering solutions, these days the challenge they have set themselves is finding 360 degree solutions that go way beyond the engineering discipline to deliver the answers to meet our needs. The magazine won’t answer the questions, but it does provide an enticing platform to analyse them.
