VIP site visit invitation to Central St Giles, London
Only 5 places remain for the Sustain Worldwide organised VIP visit to the Renzo Piano designed Central St Giles, London, from 10am-12.30pm on 22 October. Notable for its iconic citrus façades, the award-winning, mixed-use development is the eastern anchor of the UK’s busiest street, Oxford Street.
The VIP visit will be hosted by the people who created it – developer LGP, engineer ARUP HVAC supplier Climaveneta and facilities manager Broadgate Estates – to show how the building was designed and how the project was delivered meeting the needs of users, planning and building controls as well as hitting sustainability targets.
Simon Wilkes Head of Business Space Development of LGP will conduct a guided tour of the building. Wilkes, Mauro Montello Director of Climaveneta, and Anwar Harland-Khan, CEO of Sustain Worldwide, will also make short presentations. After their presentations Wilkes and Montello will be available to discuss the building and their roles in it on a one-to-one basis.
Sustain Worldwide, in its role as an elite leadership organisation bringing together leading businesses with shared sustainability objectives to collaborate, innovate and create commercial opportunities, has organised the VIP visit to share learning, disseminate best practice and to celebrate built environment sustainability success stories.

Joined up thinking communicates sustainability success in East Africa
Sustain Worldwide, as part of its own CSR programme, has committed to implement an Environmental Management System (EMS) for Medina Palms, a coastal resort & residences in Watamu, Kenya. The EMS, which demonstrates Medina Palms’ best practice intent and leadership in the region, will enable Medina Palms’ to reduce its environmental impacts and increase its operating efficiency in non-regulated areas, such as energy use, waste reduction and water conservation. Once the EMS is implemented, which is scheduled for completion by end of 2013, Sustain Worldwide will work with Medina Palms to communicate the sustainability milestones achieved that will have been robustly monitored, measured and evaluated through the formal EMS. To discuss implementing an EMS within your business and communicating the learnings to a global audience, contact us.
Press highlights this month include FMUK’s London Global Green Leader 2013 conference review. The article, published in its printed magazine, featured comment from Sustain Worldwide members, speakers and delegates. In total, coverage secured in September created 70,000 opportunities to read amongst industry professionals.

INNOVATION & EDUCATION
Re-Thinking the Future
The response to a predicted human population growth of 2 billion by 2050, rapidly increasing urbanisation and therefore our changing demands and needs requires new ways of thinking. This new thinking will come from individuals, of course, but how do visionary thinkers i.e. the leaders within global organisations a) reach their forward-thinking conclusions, b) foster them throughout their organisation? Sustain Worldwide has developed a research proposal which aims to evaluate the processes of visionary thinking and how the outcomes of those processes are inculcated within an organisation. Interested academic and corporate partners should contact us to discuss the research proposal and how they might contribute to the collaborative venture.
Circular Economy Toolkit launched
The Circular Economy, a generic term for a closed loop model to rethink resource efficiency that is supported by the Ellen MacArthur Foundation, has had a Toolkit launched. Aimed at helping businesses identify new opportunities to re-use their own resources and those in the wider environment, the Toolkit provides downloadable materials free of charge. Intended for use in internal company workshops, a 5-minute Assessment Tool is also available to download via the website www.CircularEconomyToolkit.com.
Toolkit for Resilient Cities released
Siemens, Arup and the Regional Plan Association have released its Toolkit for Resilient Cities. The downloadable report explores how the resilience of critical urban infrastructure systems might be enhanced to prepare cities more effectively for major weather-related hazards. These events are being played out against a backdrop of global population growth and increasing urbanisation.

Partners & Members News in Brief
Climaveneta has provided three high efficiency chillers for ONE NATION, a new Luxury and Fashion Outlet in Paris, which opens in October and is the first positive energy commercial building in France. The installed Climaveneta FOCS-FC units will cool the shops without consuming any ‘grey’ energy or emitting any CO2. These high efficiency air-cooled chillers are fitted with FREE-COOLING coils. Due to this technical tool, the cooling capacity is therefore obtained with almost zero energy expenditure, increasing the total building energy efficiency.
