Does communicating your sustainability stories pose you a challenge? It does for many corporates we speak and work with. But it need not. When handled well it offers your business an enormous opportunity to demonstrate your leadership, innovation and insight, and in doing so position your organisation at the forefront of your sector.
First, let’s examine why many businesses don’t communicate – both within their company and externally – what they are achieving: 1. Concern that by publicly communicating what they’re doing they will be open to scrutiny or accusations of not doing enough or quickly enough; 2. Fear of being accused of green washing; 3. Risk that they may reveal strategically sensitive information to competitors; 4. Self censorship or ‘greenmuting’ because they don’t want to be perceived as bragging.
Each one is valid but can be countered if you are: specific ie communicate one sustainability aspect or attribute in which you’ve excelled; back up what you have achieved with credible statistics and/or third party endorsement eg certification; treat the selected sustainability issue as a campaign (ie don’t expect one communication to achieve ‘success’) to build interest. Be open about the challenges and learnings – what didn’t work as well as you’d expected is often more interesting than what did.
And talk to the professionals…

London Green Sky Thinking Week
The 2014 Open-City Green Sky Thinking Week 2014 runs 28 April-2 May. Green Sky Thinking Week provides a showcase of exemplar practical solutions to 'how' we make London's built environment sustainable. The week-long programme for built environment and property professionals highlights innovative thinking and practice on how we 'design in' sustainability for London. Unlike conferences or tradeshows the events are informal, on-site or live project talks, tours, seminars, and roundtable discussions, thereby offering an independant and direct platform from which to showcase actual best practice and thinking.

‘LEGO’ building blocks a reality
An innovative technology for walls has launched in the UK. Developed in Australia, the Dincel Construction System comprises a series of blocks that ‘snap’ together to form building walls and columns, reports www.technology4change.com/. The blocks, which can be used in residential, commercial and industrial buildings, are made of a durable rigid polymer and can be used to create both internal and external walls. The blocks can be cut to specific lengths in the factory and include space for service pipes.
Once a structure has been completed, the blocks are filled with ready mixed concrete to produce a load bearing, structural element. The product has already been used in over 2000 buildings in Australia including at Penshurst Street, Willoughby (pictured) (courtesy of ZS Constructions).
